Asalamualaykum brothers and sisters! Today we are going to be talking about Zakat. When I say Zakat, the immidiate thought is ‘money’ because when you give zakat, you give money. Am I right or am I right? But the question is, why do we give is zakat? Well, the answer to that question is right over here! And a couple of other questions…

Zakat is one of the major religious duties in Islam. Literally, zakat means to “purify”. It refers to the purification of a believers’ wealth and soul. Wealth purification denotes the mobilization of assets for the purpose of financial growth and justified distribution. Purification of the soul implies freedom from hatred, jealousy, selfishness, uneasiness and greed. Other Quranic connotations also include the purification of sin.

Understanding Zakat.

Allah, the Almighty, prescribed Zakat on all Muslims and made it one of the five pillars of Islam. He says, "and establish prayer and give Zakat" [Al-Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 110]. The Prophet also said, "Islam is based on (the following) five (pillars): to testify that there is no deity save Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger, offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers, pay Zakat (obligatory charity), perform Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca) and observe fast during the month of Ramadan."...

Payment of Zakat

The prompt payment of Zakat is compulsory when the means are available, and it is not permissible to postpone its payment except in cases of necessity e.g. if the money is in a country that is far away, or the person is serving a jail term etc. Evidence for the prompt payment of Zakat is in Quran (which mean): “…but pay the due thereof on the day of its harvest” (Al-An’am: 141), “…and give Zakat” (An-Nur: 56); (a Qur’anic order), as an order necessitates prompt compliance....
