Importance of Visiting the Sick in Islam

Islam teaches us different manners of life to make us a good human being. It guides us about each and every matter about living our life. It guides about our duties as well as our rights. Visiting the sick is also an Important manner which Islam has taught us. its the Sunnah our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW to visit the person who is sick and make du’a (supplication) for him.

Some scholars are of the view that it’s a fard-kifaayah and other says its a Sunnah. If the person who is sick is a non-muslim you can also visit him. There is nothing wrong with doing so. Here are some Hadiths on Importance of seeing the sick:

Abu Musa (RA) reports that the Prophet said, “Visit the sick, feed the hungry and free the one who is imprisoned unjustly.” [Sahih Bukhari].

“The best type of visit to a sick person is when the visitor gets up to leave without delay.”[Narrated by Bayhaqi].

When you visit the sick person you should care about his rest. don’t stay for too long. don’t speak too loud. It is recommended to touch the area of pain with the right hand while reciting this supplication:

Allahuma rabbi-nas adhhabal ba’sa, ashfi wa entashafi, la shifa’ illa shifa’uka shifa’ la yughadiru saqama.

Meaning: Oh Allah! The Sustainer of Mankind! Remove the illness, cure the disease. You are the One Who cures. There is no cure except Your cure. Grant us a cure that leaves no illness.

Another du’a from the Sunnah:

Rabbana ‘atinaa fid dunyaa hasanat wafil aakhirati hasana taw wa qinaa azaaban naar.

Meaning: Oh Allah! Our Lord and Sustainer! Grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the Fire of Jahannam (Hell).
