Every Wednesday, I will share a part of the translation of the book Kitab Al-Kasb (the book of Earning a Livelihood) written by Muhammad Ibn Al-Hasan Al-Shaybani.
Part 28: Matters by Which the Bodies of the Children of Adam are Supported.
Allah Most High has created the children of Prophet Adam as creatures whose bodies do not endure except by four things, namely food, drink, clothing, and shelter, which is dwelling. As for food, Allah Most High says, “We did not give them bodies that ate no food, and they were not immortals” [Al-Quran, Surah Al-Anbiya’, verse 8]. And He, Most Exalted says, “Eat of the good things we have provided you” [Al-Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 57]. As for drink, Allah says, “And We made all living things from water.” [Al-Quran, Surah Al-Anbiya’, verse 30]. And Allah says, “Eat and drink” [Al-Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 60].
As for clothing, Allah says, “O children of Adam, we have sent you clothing to cover your private parts and for adornment.” And He Most High says, “Wear your finery at every place of worship, and eat and drink, without being immoderate, for Allah does not love the excessive” [Al-Quran, Surah Al-A’raf, verse 31].
As for the need for shelter, it is because they were created as creatures whose bodies cannot bear suffering heat and cold, and do not endure the extremes of either, for Allah says, “Humankind is created weak” [Al-Quran, Surah Al-Nisa’, verse 28]. Hence a person needs to ward off the discomfort of heat and cold from himself so that his self may endure, that he may honor with it what he has assumed of the trust of Allah, but he cannot possibly do that except by having shelter; therefore because of this significance, shelter becomes on par (almost as important) with food and drink.
