The act of saving people from harm and loss is greatly liked by Allah, no matter how small it is. Allah is greatly pleased if a person removes from the passage something that causes harm to people.
It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“While a man walks along a path, finds a thorny twig lying on the way and puts it aside, Allah would appreciate it and forgive him The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The martyrs are of five kinds: one who dies of plague; one who dies of diarrhoea (or cholera) ; one who is drowned; one who is buried under debris and one who dies fighting in the way of Allah.” [Refer Sahih Muslim no. 1914]
Removing something harmful from the road is an act of charity in gratitude to Allah, that is available to almost everyone. It is a seemingly small act and yet its magnitude is so great. The Prophet(s) tells us that it is considered a charitable act by Allah. In another narration, the Prophet(s) describes the act of removing something from the road as being a branch of our faith which on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“A man never did a good deed but removed a thorny branch from the road; it was either in the tree and someone cut it and threw it on the road, or it was lying in it, he removed it. Allah accepted this good deed of his and brought him into Paradise.” [A narration of Hasan Sahih grade (Al-Albani); refer Sunan Abi Dawud no. 5245]
Let’s put this noble teaching into practice in our lives. Let’s clean up our streets and demonstrate our love and gratitude towards our Creator.
